Tarmac Driveways – Frequently Asked Questions
As one of the most popular and cost-effective driveway materials in the UK, tarmac (or asphalt) continues to be a trusted choice for homes across Plymouth and the South Hams. At RM Driveways, we’re often asked about the durability, maintenance, and suitability of tarmac. Below you’ll find answers to the questions we’re asked most often.
What is a tarmac driveway made from?
Tarmac is made from crushed stones mixed with bitumen (a petroleum by-product). It’s laid hot over a compacted sub-base and rolled to create a smooth, solid surface ideal for driveways and roads.
How long does a tarmac driveway last?
With proper installation and care, a tarmac driveway can last between 15–20 years. Regular maintenance, like sealing cracks and cleaning oil spills, can extend its lifespan even further.
Is tarmac suitable for sloped driveways?
Yes. Tarmac works well on slopes when laid with the correct gradient and drainage system. We ensure water runs off effectively to avoid pooling or erosion.
Can I lay tarmac over an old driveway?
Sometimes. If the existing surface is stable and correctly graded, a tarmac overlay is possible. However, we often recommend a full replacement for long-term durability—especially if the sub-base has failed.
How long does tarmac take to set?
Tarmac sets quickly and can usually be walked on after 24 hours. We recommend waiting 3–5 days before driving or parking on it to avoid marks or deformation.
Does tarmac come in different colours?
Traditional black is the most common, but coloured tarmac options like red or green are available for decorative areas. We can also add contrasting kerbs or block paving borders for a bespoke finish.
How do I maintain a tarmac driveway?
Keep the surface clear of moss and debris, seal cracks promptly, and avoid turning wheels when stationary. A sealcoat every few years will protect against wear, UV fading, and water ingress.
Is tarmac cheaper than resin or block paving?
Generally yes—tarmac is often the most affordable option per square metre, particularly for larger areas. It’s quick to install, durable, and requires less labour than block paving.
Does tarmac need planning permission?
Not usually, as long as proper drainage is in place. We ensure our tarmac installations comply with local regulations and SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) where required.
Will my tarmac driveway fade?
Over time, black tarmac may fade slightly due to sunlight and weather. Sealcoating helps maintain colour and surface quality.
